Photoshop saves an old friend

''Koi and Water Lilies''  - 36'' x 40''
I was recently asked to have some cards made from my artwork, including this painting, which has been back in my studio since the early 1990's.  It  was sent with other paintings to  a gallery in Kauai.  Later, the gallery closed just days before Hurricane Iniki hit the Island!  The painting was taken off the stretcher bars, rolled and mailed back to me, which caused some serious cracks. Other paintings returned fine.   One larger painting of Vanda Orchids wasn't so lucky - went to a house on the coast, near Poipu, that was completely swept away in the storm.
Fast forward two decades!  I sprayed this painting with matte spray, photographed it, and used the magic of Photoshop to salvage the image.
Maybe I'll look for the photo of those Vanda Orchids  one day...

Del Mar Fair Demo

Summer Fun!
Linda Volz and I painted for a crowd (!) of Fair-goers who were mostly chowing down on their fried foods, which surrounded our area!  While that was a tough act to follow, we had fun with the view we were given.

Hilanjika Flowers, Thailand

9x 12'' Oil on Arches Oil Paper (NFS)
At last I'm getting to organize my paintings, photos, and life after nearly 5 weeks away.
Here is one of the 28 oil sketches done on our trip, which I will keep and display in my home or studio.

Tulips

Tulips    6x6''
Valentine's Day included my favorite things: family, food, and flowers!  I enjoyed the opening of these tulips as they bloomed.

Standing inTime

Standing in Time  8x8'' Oil on Gessobord
There's something unique about walking on a street where everything seems to be going on behind closed doors and walls.  This is such a back street in Assisi, near the top of the city, where your imagination can draw back the curtain of time, feel the tread of barefoot pilgrims, townspeople or pilgrims, contemplating many of the same things we do today, and walking in silence.

Blinding

''Blinding''
16'' x 20''  Oil on Canvas
Winter weather brings San Diego warm days, cold days, clear skies, and everything in between!  I painted this from a recent sketch done after a walk to the beach.  Painting in the studio to the sound of the drizzling rain yesterday, I was mindful of the sunlight, just behind the clouds.  I hope it brings a little sunshine into your part of the world, too.

Sun Spots on the Water, San Diego

Sun Spots on the Water
 9x12''           Oil on Gessobord            $350

Monday I set out to paint bundled up in my 'San Diego' winter clothes, (just about everything warm I own), joining several other painters along the edge of the harbor.
The clear air and cold temperatures gave a sparkle to the dancing light which I quickly chose for my composition.   The blinding light soon moved away when the sun rose higher.

Il Duomo

Il Duomo, Firenze
8x8'' Oil on Gessobord

This week I warmed up my chilly studio by painting a sunny view in Florence taken a few years back.  I liked the challenge of keeping the Duomo light and inviting, the way I remembered it.  Next visit there, I will be sure to set aside enough time to go in, instead of running by!  Will you be joining me?

Tuna and Lobster Boats, San Diego Harbor

Tuna and Lobster Boats, San Diego Harbor
 9x12''     Oil on Panel    $350
Today was sunny, cool, and the calm after a small storm (San Diego style - it rained a little yesterday!)
The painters today worked to the sounds of a local saxophone player along the boardwalk, and heard several different languages from tourists passing by.  The joy of plein air painting is sharing the view with others!

Wave Splash

Wave Splash  12x16'' Oil on Panel

Here is a painting to match the beautiful January days we often get in San Diego. Today was no exception!
